Andre 'Loki' Barbosa Claims $2.5M Boca Raton Mansion Under 'Adverse Possession' Law

Andre 'Loki Boy' Barbosa

A $2.5 million South Florida mansion has been taken over by a crafty squatter and the police are powerless to order an eviction.

The 7,500 square-foot residence in Boca Raton, Fla., is currently being inhabited by Brazilian national AndrĂ© Barbosa. The 23-year-old is using an antiquated legal covenant called "adverse possession" that allows a vacant property’s title to be acquired by anyone openly occupying and maintaining the site and paying real estate tax for seven years.

"Nobody’s happy – we all spent a lot of money to live on this street," a neighbor told ABC News. "This guy is trying to pull something."

Unlocking Your Phone Now Carries 10 Year Sentence And $1M Fine - DMCA At Its Finest

Phone Unlock Law

ADVISORY

BY DECREE OF THE LIBRARIAN OF CONGRESS

IT SHALL HENCEFORCE BE ORDERED THAT AMERICANS SHALL NOT UNLOCK THEIR OWN SMARTPHONES.

PENALTY: In some situations, first time offenders may be fined up to $500,000, imprisoned for five years, or both. For repeat offenders, the maximum penalty increases to a fine of $1,000,000, imprisonment for up to ten years, or both.*

That's right, starting this weekend it is illegal to unlock new phones to make them available on other carriers.

NEW ABSURD CRIME

When did we decide that we wanted a law that could make unlocking your smartphone a criminal offense?

The answer is that we never really decided. Instead, Congress passed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) in 1998 to outlaw technologies that bypass copyright protections. This sounds like a great idea, but in practice it has terrible, and widely acknowledged, negative consequences that affect consumers and new innovation. The DMCA leaves it up to the Librarian of Congress (LOC) to issue exemptions from the law, exceptions that were recognized to be necessary given the broad language of the statute that swept a number of ordinary acts and technologies as potential DMCA circumvention violations.

Every three years groups like the American Foundation for the Blind have to lobby [warning:PDF download] Congress to protect an exception for the blind allowing for books to be read aloud. Can you imagine a more ridiculous regulation than one that requires a lobby group for the blind to come to Capitol Hill every three years to explain that the blind still can't read books on their own and therefore need this exception?

Anonymous Threatens Massive WikiLeaks-Style Exposure, Announced On Hacked Gov Site

Anonymous Threatens Massive WikiLeaks-Style Exposure, Announced On Hacked Gov Site

Hacktivist organization, Anonymous, is threatening perhaps their biggest play ever: a massive WikiLeaks-style exposure of sensitive U.S. government secrets.
Aaron Swartz
As proof of their power, they announced details of the plan on hacked government website, the United States Sentencing Commission (USSC.gov). Citing the recent death of free information activist Aaron Swartz, they explain, "With Aaron’s death we can wait no longer. The time has come to show the United States Department of Justice and its affiliates the true meaning of infiltration."

Swartz was facing up to 50+ years in prison and a $4 million fine after releasing pay-walled academic articles from the popular JSTOR database. Some legal scholars have argued that releasing copyrighted material, or breaking the “terms of service” of a website, should not carry such harsh penalties. Anonymous is demanding that legislation be passed to no longer consider such violations a felony–a law that Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (CrunchGov Grade: A) has already introduced.

If legal reforms are not enacted, Anonymous has threatened to activate files containing embarrassing or incriminating secrets.

CAMOVER - Real Life Game To Destroy Surveillance Cameras

Activists in Berlin are teaming up to trash surveillance cameras. Points are given, with bonus scores for the most innovative modes of destruction

CAMOVER - Real Life Game To Destroy Surveillance Cameras

The rules of Camover are simple: mobilise a crew and think of a name that starts with "command", "brigade" or "cell", followed by the moniker of a historical figure (Van der Lubbe, a Dutch bricklayer convicted of setting fire to the Reichstag in 1933, is one name being used). Then destroy as many CCTV cameras as you can. Concealing your identity, while not essential, is recommended. Finally, video your trail of destruction and post it on the game's website – although even keeping track of the homepage can be a challenge in itself, as it is continually being shut down...

For those who oppose CCTV, petitions and letters only go so far in the German capital. A group of 40 protesters walked the streets of Berlin for 1984 Action Day (protests against CCTV cameras and other surveillance, named after the novel by George Orwell) in June and pressure group Control Berlin has screened short films documenting CCTV's rise. But Camover's direct-action approach revolves around a small but committed group who call themselves "workless people – we are shoplifters, graffiti sprayers, homeless and squatters". They claim to have snuffed out as many as 50 cameras since the game began a few weeks ago.

Assange - Wikilieaks Movie By Dreamworks Is Mass Propaganda Against Wikileaks And Iran

Dreamworks is following the lead of Columbia Pictures' Zero Dark Thirty, making entertaining yet skewed films that seem to only distract the public from the real facts. I guess it's working seeing as how the average American will argue their beliefs with facts they've gleaned from films. Journalism in America is an absolute joke and it doesn't help that the major film producers are playing into the sensationalism around these topics instead of giving unbiased facts.

But it is not just an attack against us - it is an attack against Iran.

Proposed New Mexico Bill Criminalizes Abortions From Rape Claiming 'Tampering With Evidence'

God - The Worlds Most Prolific Abortionist

A Republican lawmaker in New Mexico introduced a bill on Wednesday that would legally require victims of rape to carry their pregnancies to term in order to use the fetus as evidence for a sexual assault trial.

House Bill 206, introduced by state Rep. Cathrynn Brown (R), would charge a rape victim who ended her pregnancy with a third-degree felony for "tampering with evidence."

“Tampering with evidence shall include procuring or facilitating an abortion, or compelling or coercing another to obtain an abortion, of a fetus that is the result of criminal sexual penetration or incest with the intent to destroy evidence of the crime," the bill says.

Third-degree felonies in New Mexico carry a sentence of up to three years in prison.

Pat Davis of ProgressNow New Mexico, a progressive nonprofit opposing the bill, called it "blatantly unconstitutional" on Thursday.

MSNBC Incorrectly Reports No Permits Were Requested To Protest Obama’s Inauguration

2013 US Inaugural Protests

During MSNBC’s day-long marathon coverage of President Obama’s second inauguration, in which exciting details such as the first lady’s bangs and outfits were discussed, host Rachel Maddow at one point remarked that no protest permits had been requested.

The statement was significant for a couple reasons. One, it created the impression that President Obama was re-elected with unified glee. Why, no one even bothered to request a permit to protest! Because Obama is perfect! No one could even think of a reason to raise any grievances!

Second, the statement simply isn’t true. Five groups secured permits to protest. In fact, here’s a NBC affiliate interviewing a spokeswoman about those very permits:

“They have to apply for a permit and give us what time they are going to be here, what they’re going to do and about how many people they have, but as I said, we accommodate them,” National Park Service spokeswoman Carol Johnson said. “It’s their right to be here.”

Arduino Micro - Counting In Binary With LEDs

Step one for making a binary clock accomplished. Now I just need some more LEDs to finish the project. I had a lot of fun with this 2 hour project so I'll be nice and share. I present the 4 LED array schematic.

Arduino Micro - The Setup

Arduino Micro 4 LED Array Schematic

And here's the code to run it. Im running off pins 4-7 in the code, so this should port over to other Arduino models with no problem; ignore the 3bit and 4bit bit methods, just me prepping for the final project.

LED Array Binary Counting Code

[sourcecode language="java"]
int timeDigits[4][4] = {
{4,5,6,7},
{4,5,6,7}, // Fill these in later
{4,5,6,7},// with the proper pins
{4,5,6,7}
};

void setup() {

pinMode(timeDigits[1][1], OUTPUT);
pinMode(timeDigits[1][2], OUTPUT);

}

for (int i = 0; i < 1000; ++i)

TSA - Overreaching, Ineffective And Coming To A Train Station Near You

[caption id="attachment_1307" align="aligncenter" width="545"]TSA - Violating Rights Are you in?[/caption]

Early Adopter Of TSA Oversight Seen This Wednesday In California

People are used to seeing TSA inspectors at airports but on Wednesday, a specialized team made their presence known at the Amtrak station in Emeryville. Train stations are difficult to secure because they're so wide open but on Wednesday, the TSA showed up unannounced to let the public, especially potential troublemakers, know that they are keeping an eye on the rails.

Amtrak passenger Vera Molina said she noticed all the black-clad TSA inspectors right away and it's a presence she appreciates. Asked if she would like to see them more often she said, "I would, can't hurt, just in case you never know." As part of their nationwide "Viper Team" effort, the Transportation Safety Administration put about a dozen agents at the station to see and be seen, although some of the inspectors also work undercover.

TSA Is Ineffective

I almost cannot believe the reaction from people over this. The whole "just in case" story is starting to get a little old and yet we keep chasing the boogeyman on the issue. What really bothers me with this TSA expansion isn't even the concerns with invasion of privacy, it's that their efficacy in catching terrorists is nonexistent. Statistics gleaned from Representative Jason Chaffetz's hearings on TSA Oversight show that out of 25,000 recorded security breaches caught by TSA 0 (that's ZERO) were terrorists. So we are paying more and more for a service that is proven it's incompetent at it's main stated goal? Peter Greenberg speaks on the matter on his blog:

A security breach is broadly defined as anything from a misplaced checked bag to someone caught in the act of breaching security.

TSA spokesperson Greg Soule responded with the statement that “[the TSA] takes every security breach incident seriously and take[s] appropriate action accordingly which is why the TSA keeps close track of all the ‘breaches.’ Many of these instances were thwarted or discovered in the act.”

These inquiries into the TSA come after several high-profile lapses and public outrage over TSA security practices.

Among the latest outrages: TSA Says It Acted Appropriately In Demanding Removal of Terminally-Ill 95-Year-Old’s Adult Diaper.

Salon - Poverty Increasingly Means The Employed

Salon - Poverty Increasingly Means The Employed

There are 10.4 million American households that qualify as working poor, according to an economic analysis reported in Reuters. This amounts to more than 47 million Americans living in “near poverty,” defined as earning less than twice the official poverty rate, $22,811 for a family of four.

The recession officially ended in 2009 and unemployment levels have slowly receded, but income inequality continues to grow as more workers taking low-wage service jobs, many of them without benefits. The report, put out by the Working Poor Project, found that ”nearly one-third of working families now struggle, up from 31 percent in 2010 and 28 percent in 2007, when the recession began.”

Admin Script Controller - Ruby Command Line Tool

I use a lot of custom made scripts at work to make my life a little easier (or to be lazier, whichever) and sometimes have trouble finding a specific one. My solution was to make a command line interface to control the assorted scripts. To implement grab all the needed scripts and drop them in a folder with this script. To make it a bit more user friendly I suggest making a bash alias like so, alias utility="ruby ~/Documents/Code/utility-scripts/utility.rb".

interpreters = {'.rb'=>'ruby','.php'=>'php','.sh'=>'sh'}

Dir.new(File.dirname(__FILE__)).each do |file|
unless ['.', '..'].include? file
if script == File.basename(file, File.extname(file))
ext = File.extname(file)
command = "#{interpreters[ext]} #{basedir}/#{script}#{ext} #{ARGV[1]} #{ARGV[2]} #{ARGV[3]}"
puts "Calling: #{command}"
exec command unless script == 'utility'
end

Anonymous Hacks MIT, U.S. Department Of Justice In Aaron Swartz Tribute

Internet activists with the group Anonymous claimed credit for hacking the Massachusetts Institute of Technology website Sunday, in memoriam of the Aaron Swartz, the Reddit co-founder who recently committed suicide.

Reddit users reported the entire mit.edu domain was down, including their school email service. The backup emergency site, emergency.mit.net, was reportedly down too. MIT's website was restored Sunday evening, as Anonymous admitted they were behind the attack.

"Whether or not the government contributed to his suicide, the government's prosecution of Swartz was a grotesque miscarriage of justice, a distorted and perverse shadow of the justice that Aaron died fighting for — freeing the publicly-funded scientific literature from a publishing system that makes it inaccessible to most of those who paid for it — enabling the collective betterment of the world through the facilitation of sharing — an ideal that we should all support," Anonymous' said in a statement, which replaced MIT's website.

NY Times - Indian Gang Rape Victim's Essay Goes Viral 29 Years After Publication - “I Fought For My Life...And Won”

I Fought For My Life...And Won

THIRTY-TWO years ago, when I was 17 and living in Bombay, I was gang raped and nearly killed. Three years later, outraged at the silence and misconceptions around rape, I wrote a fiery essay under my own name describing my experience (warning PDF download) for an Indian women’s magazine. It created a stir in the women’s movement — and in my family — and then it quietly disappeared. Then, last week, I looked at my e-mail and there it was. As part of the outpouring of public rage after a young woman’s rape and death in Delhi, somebody posted the article online and it went viral. Since then, I have received a deluge of messages from people expressing their support.

It’s not exactly pleasant to be a symbol of rape. I’m not an expert, nor do I represent all victims of rape. All I can offer is that — unlike the young woman who died in December two weeks after being brutally gang raped, and so many others — my story didn’t end, and I can continue to tell it.

Aaron Swartz Computer Activist, Reddit Co-Owner Commit Suicide

Computer activist Aaron H. Swartz committed suicide in New York City yesterday, Jan. 11, according to his uncle, Michael Wolf, in a comment to The Tech. Swartz was 26.

“The tragic and heartbreaking information you received is, regrettably, true,” confirmed Swartz’ attorney, Elliot R. Peters of Kecker and Van Nest, in an email to The Tech.

Swartz was indicted in July 2011 by a federal grand jury for allegedly downloading millions of documents from JSTOR through the MIT network — using a laptop hidden in a basement network closet in MIT’s Building 16 — with the intent to distribute them. Swartz subsequently moved to Brooklyn, New York, where he then worked for Avaaz Foundation, a nonprofit “global web movement to bring people-powered politics to decision-making everywhere.” Swartz appeared in court on Sept. 24, 2012 and pleaded not guilty.
